Teaching an old dog new tricks is far from simple, especially if that dog is a big institution with years of legacy in how software is built an run. One thing I realized during a conversation today is that one of the reasons why decision makers in such an organization can appear to be so stuck in the dark ages is simply because they may not realize the potential that’s made available by modern practices such as automated build pipelines. If they realized that a bug fix done in the morning can safely be released to production by lunch time, then they might be more open to different ways of doing things. It’s our job to not only tell them about modern best practices, but also to explain how different pieces of the system make it possible.
